Unit 1 Practice based research

“NOT MINE”

This blog post aims to show some of the results, ideas and conclusions I have produced in the first unit of learning.
In this process, I kept exploring, deepened my understanding of animation and ability to control creation, and finally decided to further study 2D animation.

Life Drawing

I’m no stranger to sketching, but the first time I was introduced to sketching with such a short time limit, I still messed up. I initially tried to use bulk to understand and quickly construct the picture, which made it impossible for me to draw the movement of the character quickly and made no progress without a complete drawing.

After a period of practice, I gradually got the hang of it. I try to use a whole curve to form my picture, which greatly improves the efficiency of the picture and improves the viewing and dynamic fluency of the picture.

I gradually became able to make more detailed drawings, but the old habit of using structure to create pictures returned, and I repeatedly realized that I would use some of the old techniques in my mind, which forced me to wash away the old habits with a lot of practice, which I guess took years to change.:)

Software Tools

For me, I am quite unfamiliar with most of the animation, film and television post-production software, etc. It is the most important thing for me to get familiar with the software tools, and I need a lot of practice to transform them into tools that I can subconsciously operate, so that they can effectively help me in animation creation.

Animation Research

Mobius’s Comic work
Mobius-style Animation

I am quite obsessed with Moebius style works, especially after seeing “Scavengers Reign”. I want to replicate the organic texture and breath of life in the world described by Moebius. I may consider this style to complete some works in the future.

Application of Moebius style to some of my old animation exercises (background and worldview composition)

Storyboards

Storyboard screen shots

Most of my storyboards are done on tablets, and since the current works are short in duration, most of them go straight to dynamic storyboards.

Voice Acting

Sound acting is very important to animation, and this was my first experience with the process. After this recording, I began to consider sound production from the director’s point of view, and comprehensively consider the matching degree between sound and picture in an animation.

Future Project Proposal

From the skills I have learnt during Unit1, some ideas starts to pop out. However, it is still difficult for me to complete a highly completed work, and I have gained some experience in collaborative work. In the future, I will put the learning of animation workflow and improve communication ability into my plan.
